Our are eyes wanderers,
walking an endless path of their own choosing;
Bouncing and bobbing like a ship at sea without anchor.
Though the captain charts his course by the stars,
It is the waves that determine their going.
Our eyes are restless
Never finding reprieve in even the deepest of slumbers.
Even while the whole sleeps,
they never cease in their searching.
Pulled and pushed by all that is around me
Encapsulated by beauty and wonder in equal measure as hardship and pain,
We are seeing yet not always perceiving.
Everywhere I look I’m surrounded by
Fantastical sights, real and manufactured
Placed to steal my attention
Moment by moment
But nothing can hold it.
Our eyes are never satisfied.
It is no more than a moment passed once we have found what we are looking for, that again we are looking away.
Looking elsewhere, searching once more.
Our eyes are fleeting,
flipping through the crowd.
Never resting on one for more than a second, lest we reveal our humanity.
Lest we open ourselves to the wandering eyes of others.
Until I set my eyes on you.
It was your face that held my gaze;
Your eyes that matched my stare.
For once I could not look away
Your eyes held mine in a way that spoke more than words ever could.
My eyes had found their peace, their home in you.
For a moment they could rest, cease their searching,
Because in that moment I knew
Eyes were made to wander, but mine are set on you.
